| Getting
Started
hy would
you want to join World Class Health, Fitness and Sports Performance? It
sounds like such a simple question, but yet it is probably your first,
and most important question. The answer is all around you when you walk
in: There you are, starting or continuing on the road to becoming the
kind of person in the kind of shape you've always dreamed about. You look
around and notice the cleanliness of the facility, the new equipment,
motivational music, and maybe there's even a class going on that looks
like fun. All of this is important, yes, but what is even more crucial
is what you don't feel: intimidation, insecurity, maybe even fear of getting
started. These things are absent because of our dedicated, knowledgable,
certified staff who are 100% committed to helping you
acheive your goals, and it will keep you coming back. A smile and a positive
attitude are an absolute must in our staff. In a world
full of less-than-perfect customer skills, I think you'll find ours to
be second to none. It is your right as our customer.
A new fitness facility can be a confusing and sometimes scary place when
you first get started. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:
• How do you ‘work in’ with someone
using free weights?
• How do you know when it’s your turn to
use the cardio piece you want?
• How do you fit into a class you know little
about without embarrassing yourself?
• How do you know how to use all the different
pieces of equipment?
• How does that computer and TV work on the cardio
equipment?
• Will I fit in if I’m not in good shape?
• How do I get help if I need it?
All of these are common questions members ask during their fist month
or two with us.
The following guide should help you get started, or simply ask the first
staff member you see if your question is not included here.
How do I set an appointment for my
initial orientation and assessment?
We recommend that a trainer set you up on your own program – and
I highly recommend you take advantage of this opportunity to help you
learn the basics of doing your first workout program. Everyone has different
degrees of experience, so your workouts are tailored to your goals. Most
new members start with an individual personal trainer showing them the
facility and discussing your specific needs and goals. To schedule your
initial orientation and what you may need, ask any trainer or stop by
the front desk. Please try to keep the appointments you set, since last-minute
cancellations or no-shows are hard on staff scheduling and your fellow
members who desire help.
How do I "work in" on the gym
floor?
If you wish to share equipment with another member, simply ask, “May
I work in?” when you take your turn or finish your set. Always exercise
in a timely manner and then allow others to share. A common rookie mistake
is to use a piece of equipment and then rest on it between sets. This
doesn’t allow others to share and slows down the pace of the gym.
To rest, remove yourself from the piece you are using and be aware that
others may wish to use the piece or bench you are happily resting on between
sets.
And please, when done on a piece of equipment, always wipe your equipment
down with your workout towel or the towels and spray available in the
gym.
When do I know it’s my turn to use
a piece of cardio equipment?
We recommend that you match your use to the time of day and the piece
you want to use. Our busiest times are usually at the noon hour and early
evening after work. If you're one of those members who wants a fast 30
minutes and then go home, you’ll be fine. If you’re one of
those who like a long walk on the treadmill, we suggest you come in a
little before or a little after the rush hour. We don’t set time
limits on the equipment, so you are free to work out without time limits.
We also do not use sign-up sheets for equipment, since we usually have
enough of everything available. If you are waiting for a specific piece,
however, simply let the person currently on the machine know that you
wish to go next.
What is that piece of equipment?
It takes a while to learn all the pieces of equipment and what each one
does. If you have a question about any piece we have and what it does,
ask a staff member to show you how it works. Most pieces of equipment
have an instruction card attached that explains how to do the exercise
and the muscle group being worked.
How to connect?
We love comments and even have a system set up so you can feel comfortable
about expressing yourself. If you didn’t care, then you wouldn’t
take the time to let us know. If you have a suggestion or comment, stop
by the front desk and ask for a comment card. Fill it out and we’ll
address it as soon as possible. If it’s something that you feel
is too serious for a comment card, see one of the managers immediately
and let us know what you need.
How do you fit into a class you know
little about without embarrassing yourself?
Our classes are open to all members and visitors at no extra charge. Some
of the classes we recommend you sign up early for (such as our cycling
class) so there will be equipment available for you. For other classes,
simply make sure you are here prior to the start of class. If you are
unfamiliar with the class, such as kickboxing, just speak with the instructor
prior to the class and they will make sure you are ready to begin and
understand each step of the class. They will also make sure you work at
a pace that is right for you.
How does that computer and TV work on the
cardio equipment?
All of our cardio machines are equipped with the standard monitors for
work outs and flat screen televisions. They are simple to use, but generally
during your first work out a staff member will quickly show you how to
best use the options.
Will I fit in if I’m not in good
shape?
World Class Health, Fitness and Sports Performance takes great pride in
working with members and guests who have not worked out in some time,
or have never worked out, and making them feel comfortable and motivated
in our environment.
